Postgres major version upgrades are a topic of frequent complaints. Adding extensions into the mix just makes things more complicated. Some extensions can just be uninstalled and reinstalled after the upgrade. Those that affect the data stored, including those providing data types and access methods need to ensure compatibility across Postgres major versions to allow the extensions to be upgraded before the database.
